["San Diego via El Centro screamers Batwings  will be debuting their new line up at the Ruby Room on May 20.   Singer/keys/bassist Robbie Lopez left the band and is currently making  music with Boo  Report, Cub  and Pony, and Giraffe Ears.  Bass duties are being resumed by  guitarist Larry Stage's brother Scott (SnailS!) and  Mexicali native Carlos Quintero (Lipstick  Terror, Chrome Eye) has joined on vocals.

The Ruby Room show will also be the premiere of guitar/vox Bryan  Oczkowski's Pure Data Machine, a homemade noise generator which runs off  Pure Data, an open source visual programming language created by UCSD  professor Miller Puckett. (EDIT: It turns out this is a lie.  The PDM will rear its head in a few  months.)
 
The band expects to release an album, recorded at UCSD's Conrad  Prebys Music Center, in the next few months."]
Rad! Bryan will not be debuting his pure data machine quite  just yet. However, he does have a few other tricks up his sleeve!

We'd like to officially announce that our dear friend Carlos Quintero is now the newest member of Batwings, and will be handling vocal duties from here on out.  We are all very excited, and are big fans of his other projects - Lipstick Terror, and Chrome Eye, both of Mexicali.   He will be in the studio soon with Bryan to record for the new album, which is close to completion & will be released in the very near future.

Sadly, it is unfortunate that we must also announce that Robert will no longer be playing with us.   Robert has been playing with Batwings since we started back in 2005, contributing bass, guitar, keyboards, and vocals over the past several years. We will miss him and his talents greatly, but are excited to see what he does in his future musical endeavors. Please check out some of his other projects:  Boo  Report, Cub and Pony, and Giraffe Ears.

You can still hear Robert on the new record, but we will be adding a new bassist in the next month or so. We'll then be writing new material, followed by some long overdue touring.  Stay tuned.

[“We decided we wanted something that doesn’t exist,” Bobby Bray (The Locust), a student of interdisciplinary computing and the arts at UCSD, says at the Camel’s Breath Inn in Mission Valley. “So we rolled up our sleeves and made it ourselves.”
The Pure Data Machine, a collaboration with Bryan Oczkowski of Batwings, is a customizable effects controller based on an open-source program called Pure Data. The box of knobs, switches, lights, photocells, and a joystick runs off of a thumb drive, so data is easily exchanged and modified. The apparatus was recently unveiled during the Experimental Guitar Show at Soda Bar.
“It can be argued that sound and timbre metaphorically symbolize thoughts and feelings that cannot be explained otherwise via language,” Bray says. “If you believe that to be true, then you are going to become reliant upon effect companies to define what you can communicate.”]

Recording New Album

This weekend we began recording for our upcoming new album. We tracked all the drums, bass, keys, and half of the guitars at UCSD's Prebys Conrad Music Center. This will be the best recording to date and has what we feel, are the best songs we have written in the past few years of Batwings' existence. US TWO RECORDS ‘02' BATWINGS / WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH - "Dr. Ohm vs. The Exploding Amp" / "Houston Voice"

US TWO RECORDS second split vinyl release "02" brings together San Diego's BATWINGS and Austin's WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH. Run in a limited batch of 500 copies (300 transparent red with black bleed & silver splatter and 200 black with silver splatter), this technique was a first for Pirate's Press and also their "Record of the Week" ending on July 17th, 2009.

Batwings showcases the track "Dr. Ohm vs. The Exploding Amp" which highlights their spastic hardcore sound influenced from early 2000 SoCal underground acts such as The Locust, Holy Molar and Le Shok. "Dr. Ohm vs. The Exploding Amp" was recorded by Batwings: Robert Lopez - Bass/Keys/Vox, Bryan Oczkowski - Guitar/Vox, Larry Stage - Guitar and Sebastian Ulloa -Drums. As a favor to "US", the track was mastered by Dana Fehr ; danarebel@gmail.com.

Austin mini-grunge orchestra, When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, recorded their track "Houston Voice" as a seven piece, but are currently touring as a 4, sometimes 5 piece. They have been featured on a Cardboard Records compilation; an experimental noise and lo-fi electronic label run by Dan Friel and B.J. Warshaw of Parts & Labor. "Houston Voice" was engineered by Chico Jones at OHM Recording Facility in Austin, TX and mixed by Chico and dinos. The band: cory, marc, nate, george, brandon, jeff, and jesse.

BATWINGS and WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH will be performing together at THE CASBAH in San Diego on August 17th, 2009.

Records will be available this Friday from When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, who are playing Parade of Flesh's birthday on July 24th with Pterodactyl and Church of the Snake.
Edicion Especial: Parade of Flesh took the first 100 copies of vinyl (50 red and 50 black) and added a gun metal metallic paper sleeve with velum liner notes attached by a satin ribbon on a hand-numbered tag. All hand assembled and designed by girl wonder: Margarita Buenaventura.

The track will be part of Justin Pearson and Nathan Joyner's Leg Lifters project. We'll keep you posted on this as it moves along. Stoked!

We are playing with When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth from Austin, TX @ The Casbah on August 17th. The 7" split we did with them has had a few setbacks but should be coming out this summer, and will hopefully be available at this show. Our good friends Fever Sleeves will be joining us as well!

Additionally, we are currently writing and recording in the studio after a long break of taking it easy on the music front for a while. In the past couple of months we've had a lot of stuff happen like apartments burning down, getting engaged, moving, finishing school, etc. Things have been a little crazy, but we are excited to get back to work and make some noise.

It's not quite the "Extra Special Good" recognition we got in the same issue two years ago, but it's a good laugh.

Too much time in El Centro will make anyone a little crazy. Instead of shooting highway signs or cooking bathtub meth, Batwings turned their tumbleweed ennui into experimental post-punk cacophony. There are moments of fractured inspiration here, but a loose interpretation of the line between noise-as-music and noise-as-migraine suggests the band should worry less about remembering to “save” and more about knowing when to hit “delete.” MS/batwingskillyou.

The Open Door Sessions went pretty well last Friday. It sort of reminded me of the whole Fox Rox thing that was going on a few years back. Everyone that worked there treated us incredibly well, and everything was very professional. It was a bit of a weird experience having all of those video cameras roaming around us, but it was actually pretty fun. Robert was late and didn't make it into the interview part, but he did show up in time to rock. X1FM has every band that comes in, do an art piece for their studio, so I included a picture of that in here as well. As you can see, Bryan once again continues to be Seb's source of inspiration in his art. When we get the video clip from the show, we will post it up so you can see some highlights.

Here are the rest of the awesome photos from Chris Woo. The show this night was way rad, probably one of our best ones recently. It was All Leather's first show, which was badass, but their set had to be cut short due to technical difficulties. One of the guitarist's pedals was malfunctioning...which we empathized with completely. Our own pedals have caused us several headaches & bad shows of our own over the years. Local punks Braiins! opened up the show while Hawnay Troof (Vice Cooler of XBXRX) closed with an energetic set that made the night feel like the party was just getting started. Thanks again to Justin Pearson from All Leather for inviting us. We're playing with them again in late Februrary at King Music.

5th Annual 'Viva El Valle' Art Show (Friday Dec. 26th 2008)

We will be playing the 5th annual 'Viva El Valle' Art Show, which takes place every year during winter break in El Centro. The art show is presented by Frankie- from Twilight, and will feature pieces from artists who are originally from the Imperial Valley/Mexicali region. This will be the third year we have played this, and can't wait to do it again. It is always the perfect time of year for a show as all of the rats from the Imperial Valley come home for a brief visit to their loved ones. I'd say there were close to two-hundred people last year before the event had to get moved across the street...so hopefully this year will be just as big.

X1FM - The Open Door

There is a new local radio show on X1FM called The Open Door which airs online Friday nights from 6:00-8:00 PM. They will be playing all local San Diego bands including Batwings.

"X1FM has a been an online network for the last 2 years and has only gone up in popularity. The Open Door is a brand new show hosted by Andrew (the host of the NoiseLab) as a tribute to ALL local music. All genres will be played. All recordings will be played. All requests will be met. This show isn't about corporate sponsors or making money. It is about local music and the local San Diego scene, East county to the beach. If you want your band played on The Open Door, shoot Andrew an email at andrew@x1fmradio.com . Help spread the word and keep on making music!"

Andrew asked us for some music so we thought we would give a shout-out this cool new show. By December 5th, Andrew will have the second component of this gig going which will be called The Open Door Sessions. A different band every week will be picked to come in and play on stage in front of a live audiance which will be broadcast online (live) via webcam. This should be pretty exciting!
